Is there any connection between SteadyScrib and Parkinson’s UK?
No, there is no commercial or financial relationship between us.
We have a series of policies and practices in place to make sure that our review is independent of any existing relationship between our organisations or staff. If you’d like to find out more about this, you can read about it in our transparency statement.
Background information on SteadyScrib
SteadyScrib was created by Izzy Mokotoff and Alexis Chan, two students in Illinois.
IIzzy grew up writing weekly handwritten letters with her grandfather. In 2021, this treasured tradition was cut short, as her grandfather lost his ability to write due to his advancing Parkinson’s symptoms.
Izzy teamed up with Alexis, a biomedical engineering student, to design a pen that uses a magnetic component between the pen and a clipboard to stabilise against tremors.
Other frequently asked questions
What’s the magnetic strength of the pen, and is it safe to use if I’ve had DBS?
The SteadyScrib pen has a magnetic strength of 482 mT without magnetic paper fasteners, increasing to 502 mT with the fasteners. While the company states the product is generally safe, if you’ve had Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), they recommend consulting your healthcare provider before use.
What if the pen runs out of ink?
The pen is designed to have a lifespan comparable to that of a standard pen. If it runs out of ink, please visit the SteadyScrib website and submit an inquiry through the “Contact Us” form, selecting the subject line “Pen ran out of ink.” At this time, the company is offering replacement pen sets at a discounted rate.
